Gary Friedlander for Aptakisic-Tripp Board of Education - District 102

Dear Neighbor:

We all have a vested interest in the future, whether that future is tomorrow, five years from now, or fifty years from now. Whether or not you have children, we can all agree that the students of our community represent the future and that their education and experiences will ultimately shape the future of our community and the world.

As my wife, Wendy, and I watch our daughters and their friends grow up and begin school at Earl Pritchett Elementary School, we wonder what their future will be like. Like all parents, we want to ensure that they have every opportunity available to them, including a high quality education -- an education that will provide them with not just facts and figures, but with a thirst for knowledge so that they will be prepared for the world of the 21st Century.

As a member of District 102's Board of Education I will work with other members of the board, the administration, the faculty and community leaders toward ensuring, through long range, fiscally prudent, planning, that our schools can always provide our children with this type of quality education.

However, as articulated in the district's Strategic Design Report, the classroom is not the only learning environment.  The home and the community are two of the most important learning environments.  I will work toward providing parents and the community with increased opportunities to be involved in the education process. With the demands on today’s families, I will also work to make it easier for parents to increase their involvement in the education of their children through easier access (e.g., e-mail) to school officials and teachers.

The skills and strengths I will bring to the Board of Education include consensus building, dispute resolution skills, a non adversarial approach to negotiation, a knowledge and appreciation of technology including its benefits and limitations, and a deep commitment to community service.

These skills and strengths are the result of my educational pursuits, business and legal experiences, support of my family and service to my community, including five years as a member of the Lake County Regional School Board and seven years as a community mediator.

I ask for your vote on April 3, 2001 and the opportunity to serve our community today...for tomorrow.

Candidate
